James McCallum was born in Wells-next-the-sea, North Norfolk on 25th April 1970 to a local family. He grew up in the area and soon became interested in its wildlife and landscape. On leaving school he went on to study at art college but it was not until his early twenties that both interests were seriously combined and the outdoors chosen as a studio to draw, paint and study wildlife directly from life. In 1996 he graduated from the Royal College of Art with a masters degree in natural history illustration and subsequently won several awards for his paintings.

The rich and varied wildlife and habitats of North Norfolk provide ample subjects, situations and inspiration to draw and paint. However a desire to know more about the behaviour and habits of regular migrant birds to the area has resulted in trips as far afield as Namibia, Ghana, Arctic Norway, Finnish Lapland, the Middle East, Siberia and Alaska.

In 2001 he was invited by the Artists for Nature Foundation to join an expedition to promote the protection of the old forests of the High Pyrenees in Catalonia.

He currently lives in Norfolk and divides his time between painting, writing, bird surveys and seasonal wardening work on nature reserves.
